Engaging Our Communities is a program that provides an opportunity for community members to come together to examine issues that affect their community while working collaboratively to address the issues through education, advocacy, research, and theater. The program features trainings, workshops, focus groups, and culminating theater production. The goals of the program are to: 1) Raise awareness on the topic of examination; 2) Engage the community and stakeholders; and 3) Work collaboratively to address the problem of examination. The program engages students, artists, scholars, stakeholders and the community at large to participate in the process. The impact of the program is that it leads to concrete action steps to resolve community problems, while also leading to attitudinal transformation, empowerment, and community resilience.
Engaging Our Communities 2018 Pittsburgh, PA
Engaging Our Communities was launched in Pittsburgh from April to September 2018. The topic of examination was the impact of environmental injustice on marginalized communities. The program engaged students from the University of California Irvine Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy and the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, artists, children, families, youth and adults, and various local community organizations.
